En las notas de su álbum Biograph, escrito por Cameron Crowe, Bob Dylan dijo lo siguiente sobre esta canción: «Esta fue definitivamente una canción con un propósito. Fue influenciada, por supuesto, por las baladas irlandesas y escocesas "Come All Ye Bold Highway Men", "Come All Ye Tender Hearted Maidens". Quería escribir una gran canción, con breves versos concisos que se acumularan unos a otros de manera hipnótica. El movimiento de los derechos civiles y el movimiento de la música folk estuvieron bastante unidos por un tiempo y se aliaron en ese momento. Casi todos conocían a los demás.
