La letra se refiere a una canción de un álbum anterior, "Seven Seas of Rhye" de Queen II, con la línea “messenger from Seven Seas has flown, to tell the King of Rhye he’s lost his throne”.
Brian May declaró en una entrevista en 1999: "‘ Lily of the Valley' fue totalmente sincera. Se trata de mirar a una novia y darnos cuenta de que su cuerpo necesitaba estar en otro lugar. Es una gran obra de arte, pero es la última canción que podría ser un éxito".
