Esta canción fue escrita para Nico (cantante alemana que colaboró en el famoso álbum debut de The Velvet Underground), cuyo verdadero nombre era Christa Pfaggen. Cohen declaró en vivo en Hannover, en 1979: "Escribí esta canción hace mucho tiempo para una chica alemana, su nombre era Christa. Tenía otro nombre que usaba en Estados Unidos, pero descubrí que su nombre realmente era Christa. Lo más maravilloso de esta chica que descubrí, después de darle esta canción y cantarla para ella, fue que era sorda.
