Si bien las especulaciones siguen siendo rampantes sobre quién es "Mr. Jones" y qué se supone que significa exactamente esta canción, no hay una respuesta definitiva hasta la fecha. Lo más cercano que hemos visto a una respuesta del propio Dylan aparece en una entrevista dada en Keys to the Rain: The Definitive Bob Dylan Encyclopedia, donde Dylan afirma que el "Mr. Jones" en cuestión es una persona real a la que no se conoce con este nombre, que es un pinboy, que usa tirantes y "se pone los ojos en el bolsillo", lo que podría significar que usa anteojos.

Dylan dijo en otro lugar que se llamaba Jones, pero que si dijera su primer nombre sería demandado. Durante los conciertos en 1966 solía decir: «Esta es una canción sobre personas que me hacen preguntas» al tocar "Ballad of a Thin Man".
