Brian May comenzó a escribir la canción en Tenerife, mientras trabajaba para su Ph.D. como astrónomo. Compuso el riff con una guitarra española, y se levantó temprano una mañana y lo tocó mientras cantaba la línea "Tie Your Mother Down" que él consideraba una broma. El vocalista Freddie Mercury lo alentó a mantener dicha línea.
